Prato is one of the most underestimated bases for mountain hiking in Tuscany. The Calvana ridge begins just north of the city — visible from the centre — and the Acquerino–Cantagallo nature reserve is thirty minutes by car. The contrast between the industrial plain and the mountain terrain above it is immediate and complete.
The Calvana is Prato’s own mountain — a long limestone ridge that runs north of the city with views in both directions. What makes it distinctive is the wild horses: a semi-feral herd has lived on the ridge for decades, visible from the trail at close range. The grassland at the top is open and exposed, with nothing between you and the Apennine panorama.
The Calvana and Monte Maggiore route covers this terrain in detail — the approach, the horse herd, and the full ridge walk. It is one of the most surprising hikes within thirty minutes of any Tuscan city.
East of the Calvana, the Acquerino–Cantagallo reserve is a different kind of landscape: dense mixed forest of beech, chestnut, and Douglas fir planted in the 1930s alongside native species. Red deer. In autumn, some of the best porcini in northern Tuscany. The forest here is old enough that the canopy closes completely overhead on the main trails.
This is the terrain for forest immersion — long, quiet walks where the silence is as much the point as the scenery. For a broader survey of what the Prato mountains offer, the Prato hiking guide covers both the Calvana ridge and the reserve routes with difficulty ratings and seasonal notes.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for both landscapes. May brings wildflowers on the Calvana grassland and the beech forest in new leaf. September and October add mushroom season in the reserve and the full colour of the chestnut canopy. The Calvana ridge is exposed and cold in winter but clears quickly after snowfall. The forest trails in the reserve are often hikeable even in January.
