Escape the noise and find tranquility on this exceptional hike through the Acquerino-Cantagallo Nature Preserve in the Province of Prato. A Journey …

Hiking near Montecatini Terme: private guided treks in the Apennines above the spa town. Ancient woodland, glacial lakes, and ridge walks starting 20 min away.
Montecatini Terme is known for its thermal baths and Liberty-era architecture. What most visitors don’t realise is that the Apennines begin immediately to the north, and the trailheads are twenty minutes by car.
The mountains above Montecatini are part of the Appennino Pistoiese — the same ridge that runs from Pistoia to the Emilian border. Dense mixed woodland, clean streams, and very few other people on the trail.
The terrain directly above Montecatini divides into two distinct zones.
At lower elevations, the chestnut and oak forests of the Pescia and Uzzano hills offer easy, shaded walking for most of the year. The paths are well-maintained and the elevation gain is modest — good terrain for a half-day out.
Higher up, the character changes. Lago Nero sits at around 1300 metres in a glacial cirque on the Lucca–Pistoia border — a dark, still lake surrounded by fir and beech, with the silence that high-altitude forest produces. The approach from the Montecatini side is one of the less-travelled routes to it.
For those who want more detail on what this area offers, the Montecatini hiking guide covers the main options including the medieval village of Montecatini Alto and the trails that radiate from it.
Most trailheads above Montecatini are 20 to 30 minutes by car. A car is required for the higher-altitude routes. The town itself — Montecatini Alto — sits at 290 metres on a ridge above the spa town and is accessible by funicular or by a short road; the walking from there is immediate.
The exact meeting point is communicated 24 hours before each hike. Parking is available at all main trailheads.
Spring and autumn work best. May brings the chestnut forest into full leaf and empties the trails completely. October adds mushroom season and the first colour in the canopy. The lower routes are hikeable year-round; the higher terrain can carry snow from December through March.
Summer is manageable at altitude. The lower forest routes are best avoided at midday in July and August.
