A day on quiet ground
The Ripafratta Fortress (or Castello di San Paolino) is a powerful symbol of Tuscan military history, strategically located on Monte Pisano at the historic border between Pisa and Lucca.
Key Highlights & History
- Medieval Origins: The fortress’s current structure dates back primarily to the 13th century, built to control the vital passage through the Serchio valley.
- Napoleonic Interlude: The site was used and strategically modified during the Napoleonic era (early 19th century), marking one of its final military roles before falling into disuse.
- Unique Flora: The surrounding slopes of Monte Pisano are notable for their particularly rich presence of Bay Laurel (Alloro) trees. You will frequently walk past the distinctive, fragrant foliage of this plant along the well-marked trails.
The trek offers both a journey through medieval and Napoleonic history and a beautiful natural experience. From the ramparts, enjoy panoramic views sweeping across the plains of Pisa and Lucca.
This hike is a must for history enthusiasts and nature lovers.
