Hiring a Private Hiking Guide in Lucca: How It Works

Most people hire a guide for the routes. I think the routes are the easy part.

What you are actually hiring is judgement — where to go today, in this weather, at your pace.

I am Stefano, a certified hiking guide based near Lucca. I work these mountains, plains, and forests year-round. This page is for someone who has already decided they want a local. Now you want to know how it works and who I am.

Why Hire a Local Guide From Lucca

Lucca sits at a rare meeting point of landscapes. The Apuan Alps to the north. The Pistoiese Apennines to the east. Monte Pisano just outside the walls.

That variety is the opportunity. It is also the problem. Choosing well — for your fitness, your time, and the season — takes local knowledge.

A good guide turns a long list of options into the right single day. I know which trails are quiet midweek. I know which views reward an early start, and where the light falls best.

I also read the terrain as a naturalist, not only a route-finder. The plants, the forest structure, the seasonal behaviour of the land — most visitors miss that layer entirely.

The Promise

Every experience I run is built on a few fixed commitments:

  • Always private. You are never joined by strangers. The day is yours, your family’s, or your group’s alone.
  • Italian and English. I guide fluently in both, so nothing about the landscape gets lost.
  • An unhurried pace. I teach mindfulness, and it shapes how I walk. We move at your speed, not a schedule’s.
  • Dogs welcome. Your dog can join, on a leash at all times.

This is not checklist tourism. It is a curated day in the company of someone who knows the ground.

What a Day Looks Like

We agree the destination beforehand, usually after a short conversation about what you want.

Some days are flat and historical, like the Nottolini aqueduct on the plain. Others climb into marble mountains or beech forest. The range reachable from Lucca is genuinely wide.

I do not re-describe every route here, because each one already has its own page. If you want to browse the terrain first, three guides cover it well:

Two walks make especially good first days near Lucca. The Nottolini aqueduct is flat, photographic, and starts at the city walls.

Plans change, and weather is weather. You can cancel ahead of time for a refund, and reschedule free of charge if conditions turn unsafe.

You are not gambling on the forecast when you book. That reassurance matters more than most people expect.

Who I Am

I am GAE-certified, recognised by the Tuscany Region, and a member of AGAE. I also hold a regional mushroom identification certification, and I photograph these landscapes professionally.

It adds up to a single day. The walking, the natural history, and the photographer’s eye come from one person.

If you have decided you want a private guide based near Lucca, the next step is simply a conversation.
