Most visitors to this corner of Tuscany are heading somewhere else. To Pisa for the tower. To Lucca for the walls. To the coast for the beach.
Almost none of them know that, for a few weeks each summer, a former rice basin between those cities fills with thousands of pink lotus flowers.
It is the largest lotus field in Italy, it sits on the shore of Lake Massaciuccoli, and you can see it for free from a flat gravel path.

Italy’s Largest Lotus Field
The flowers grow at Massarosa, in the small hamlet of Bozzano, in the province of Lucca. The basins they fill were rice fields until the last century. Today they hold what is often described as the largest expanse of lotus in Italy, around seven hectares of it.
Lotus are not water lilies, though people often confuse the two. A water lily floats flat on the surface. A lotus lifts its leaves and its flowers clear of the water, on tall stems, so each bloom stands above a sea of round green pads.
The flowers are large and soft, shaded from pale white at the base to deep pink at the tips. On a still morning the whole basin seems to glow.

When the Lotus Blooms
The lotus blooms in high summer. In most years the first flowers open in late June, the display peaks through July, and the last blooms fade in August. Like any wild bloom, the exact timing shifts a little year to year with the weather.
Go in the morning. Lotus flowers open with the early light and begin to close by midday. By the afternoon, much of the spectacle has quietly folded itself away.
I never promise a specific bloom on a specific day. I watch the season and choose the morning. That is the honest way to plan around a living landscape.
How to See It, for Free
The simplest way costs nothing. Park at the Massarosa-Bozzano railway station, or arrive by regional train, and follow the cycle and pedestrian route known locally as the Lotus Flower Path.
From the Bozzano side, the basins stay open to view through the season. The walking is flat and easy, suitable for almost anyone.
- Best light: the first two hours after sunrise, while the flowers are open.
- Access: free from the public path; a local farm offers closer, guided viewing with seasonal hours, so check before you travel.
- Terrain: flat gravel, pushchair and family friendly.
- Bring: water, sun protection, and insect repellent. This is a wetland in summer.
Make a Morning of It
The lotus deserve an hour, not a whole day. The real pleasure is pairing them with the rest of this quiet plain between Pisa and Lucca.
The same shoreline holds the Oasi LIPU at Lake Massaciuccoli, a wetland reserve of herons, boardwalks, and reed beds. Both sit inside the larger San Rossore park system that runs all the way down to the coast.
If you have a base nearby, the lotus slot neatly into a list of day trips from Lucca or day treks from Pisa, or a slower morning out of Viareggio behind the beach.
They are also a smart answer to the heat. When the mountains feel too exposed, a flat lakeside walk at dawn is one of the better ways to spend a Tuscan summer day. For another fleeting Tuscan bloom that rewards the same careful timing, look to the spring white asphodel meadows in the mountains.
