Pisa is often seen as a quick stop. People see the Square of Miracles and then move on.
But the geography around Pisa is fascinating. To the north, the sharp peaks of the Apuan Alps. To the east, the Monte Pisano ridge. Southward, the plains lead toward the sea.
If you are based in Pisa, you have access to some of the most diverse trekking in Tuscany. Many of these trails are reachable by a short train ride, making them perfect for those traveling without a car.
Here are the best day treks from Pisa, ranked by effort and landscape.
1. Acquedotto Nottolini: Neoclassical Geometry
This is the most atmospheric walk near Pisa. It is entirely flat, historical, and architecturally stunning.
The Nottolini Aqueduct was built in the 1820s. It consists of over 400 stone arches crossing the plain toward the hills of Guamo. Walking alongside it feels like walking through a 19th-century landscape painting.
- Logistics: Take the regional train from Pisa Central to Lucca (20 mins). The walk starts just outside the Lucca station.
- Why go: It is perfect for photography and low-effort days. The perspective of the arches in the afternoon light is unmatched.

2. Ripafratta: Medieval Fortresses and Laurel Forests
Ripafratta sits exactly on the historical border between Pisa and Lucca. It is a place of ancient rivalries.
The trek leads you to the Rocca di San Paolino, a 13th-century fortress. The trail climbs through a dense forest of bay laurel (Laurus nobilis), which gives the air a distinctive, spicy scent.
- Logistics: Reachable in 15 minutes by train from Pisa San Rossore or Pisa Central. No car is needed.
- The Experience: A short, steep climb with a high reward. The view from the castle over the Serchio river valley is one of the best in the province.

3. Passo di Dante: The View Over the Tower
Dante Alighieri wrote about this spot in the Divine Comedy. He described it as the mountain that prevents the Pisans from seeing Lucca.
The Passo di Dante is a classic local trek. You climb the Monte Pisano ridge until you reach the commemorative monument. From here, on a clear day, the Leaning Tower looks like a white toy sitting in the middle of the city.
- Logistics: Best reached by car to Santa Maria del Giudice (15 mins from Pisa).
- The Experience: A moderate hike through olive groves and Mediterranean macchia. You stand where poets stood, looking at the sea and the city simultaneously.
4. Marmifera del Corchia: The Marble Mountain Road
If you have a car and want something dramatic, drive 45 minutes north to the Apuan Alps.
The Marmifera del Corchia is a mountain road carved into the marble itself. It leads through active quarries where the white stone reflects the sun. The landscape is grey, white, and vertiginous.
Logistics: Car required to Levigliani. Weekend access only (no trucks).
The Experience: This is high-altitude trekking on a monumental scale. You are walking through the same stone Michelangelo used for his statues.
How to Choose Your Trek
- No Car? Choose Nottolini or Ripafratta. The regional train system is reliable and fast.
- History Buff? Passo di Dante or Ripafratta offer deep medieval connections.
- Looking for Drama? The Apuan Alps (Corchia) provide the most intense visual experience in Tuscany.
As a professional guide and photographer, I lead private day experiences to all these locations. The territory is complex; having someone who understands the geology, the light, and the trails makes the difference between a simple walk and a true discovery.
